about
Liugu laugu is an old Shrove Tuesday song from Tori, Estonia. Every Estonian eats pea soup and Shrovetide buns and of course goes sledding on Shrove Tuesday to compete for the longest slide. Back in the days you could predict how long your flax would grow the following season from the length of the slide.
lyrics
EST:
Liugu, laugu!
Liugu, laugu!
Liugu, laugu!
Ei sa tohe ümmer minna,
liugu, laugu.
Liugu, laugu!
Siis jääb linad koerusesse*,
liugu, laugu.
Slide and glide!
You mustn't fall over,
slide and glide.
Slide and glide!
Then the flax will go to seed,
slide and glide.
Slide and glide!
Slide and glide!
Slide and glide!
Mud-rushes for those sitting inside!
slide and glide.
Slide and glide!
Flax for the sliders,
slide and glide.
Slide and glide!
Slide and glide!
